Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and this publication is from only a few years ago in 2017.

The Print Shop - 40 Years of Calverts

Calverts is a workers' cooperative with a history of creating and producing eye-catching print and design. To celebrate Calverts 40th year, they invited Alice Pattullo and publishers Design For Today to work with them on a creative print animation, following the journey of an idea as it transforms into a finished product. It's a whirlwind tour through illustration, art direction, design, file set up and reprographics, with a sprinkling of handy tips along the way.

The size of the publication is 148x95mm, portrait with a 6mm spine.

This publication is a long concertina - it is quite simply one long sheet which concertina folds into a pre-creased spine, which forms a cover.

The below image shows a 'birdseye' view which demonstrates how it folds into the spine. Over the last 30 years, I have always referred to this format as a long concertina, however in recent years people have started using the term Leporello to describe this type of folding - personally I think this is just confusing! 

The 26pp book is actually made from two sheets of paper, carefully joined, with a glued tab, which you can just make out in the image below.

The publication is printed Offset Litho on our Shiro Echo, White 250gsm, which is 100% Recycled and FSC accredited. The weight of the material is crucial for this format - too heavy and it will be too springy, too light and it won't take the creases and hold together well enough, 250gsm is just perfect. Below is the spread about Riso printing, where there is a 'tipped in' sheet, which is Riso printed on the right hand page.265x168

The page is 265x168mm and is folded once to reveal the below...

...and then folding up.

...there's even information about paper sizes.

It's a really beautifully conceived and executed publication with superb illustrations by Alice Pattullo and excellent writing.

The Dark Self

Shown at York St Mary's in the city of York, Susan Aldworth’s exhibition The Dark Self was inspired by her research into sleep during her three year residency at the University of York working with neuroscientist Professor Miles Whittington and art historian Professor Michael White.

This is the supporting literature, which is a single piece of paper but which folds down in a most interesting way, forming a diagonal fold.

The finished size is 210x120mm and is folded so it forms this 8pp format as you can see from the birds eye view below...

...and below shows the way the text concertina's into the folded spine.

The publication folds out to a finished size of 420x600mm (see below) which as I mentioned previously folds down to a size of 210x120mm - which actually makes a 20pp, however as the front and back cover has the fold, it's probably more accurately described as a 16pp - it's a very clever fold indeed!

It is printed offset litho in just two metallic colours - silver and gold, the gold only featuring on the Monoprint image above. One of our black paper ranges, Notturno 110gsm was chosen as it is a bit smoother than other black ranges and is lightweight enough (but not too light!) to perform the tricky fold. Below shows the detail of the front cover and the type in the silver which works superbly.

The literature concept and design is by Valle Walkley. Print and finishing is by Calverts.

LCC Postgraduate Show

The identity for this year's LCC degree shows is by Tara Hanrahan at Think/Do, which includes interior signage, exterior signage, wayfinding and literature. This week is the postgraduate show, with over 200 post graduate students showing their work. The Postgraduate shows run from 28.11.2016 to 10.12.2016.

The printed collateral includes this postgraduate information booklet. Size is A5 (210x148mm), portrait and is saddle stitched.

The 4pp cover is on Colorset (100% Recycled) Amethyst 270gsm, printed offset litho in black only

 

 The 8pp text is printed on Crush, Grape 120gsm, printed in two colours, black and a special colour.

If you are not aware of our range called CRUSH from Favini, it is very unusual! The paper is made partly using the residue from the industrial processing of crushed citrus fruit, coffee, nuts, olives, kiwi, corn, cherries, lavender and most recently grape. These agro-industrial "end of life" products replace up to 15% of conventional tree pulp and are combined 30% post-consumer recycled waste, FSC virgin fibre and is produced with 100% green energy. As a result, the sheet is not a "clean" paper, it has identifiable pieces of residue visibly in the paper, as you can see below...

The range is available in 100, 120, 200, 250 and 350gsm and the shades are natural, earthy tones and the feel of the paper is natural and tactile. See the range here.

Printing is by Calverts, who are a London based printing cooperative who focus on sustainable printing. Another lovely feature, is the use of the black wire stitches below:

LCC Degree Show Book

The identity for this year's LCC degree shows is by Tara Hanrahan at Think/Do, which includes interior signage, exterior signage, wayfinding and literature. With over 700 graduating students showing a diverse range of work, it is a serious challenge for any identity to encompass the breadth of what is on offer. Inside|Outside 2013



Inside|Outside is an interesting project run by the printmaking team at the London College of Communication (LCC). The project involved 3 workshops, 3 locations and 3 processes. "A challenge to revisit the whole process of printmaking, considering parameters such as sustainability, environment, resources and waste. An experience outside the comfort of the studio to let the natural elements changing staff and students' way of thinking."

The end of project publication is printed by London based co-operative Calverts, chosen as they have excellent sustainable credentials and use all vegetable inks and their energy use is from renewable sources. They selected Favini SHIRO Alga Carta, Avorio 90gsm, chosen because it was in keeping with the sustainable nature of the project, because it is manufactured partly using algae harvested from the Venice lagoon, combined with FSC certified fibres. Algae blooms at the end of Summer in the Venice lagoon as the warm water combines with pollution and must be harvested to maintain the lagoon's eco-balance.

The format is an A5 broadsheet which folds out to A2. Printed in two colours, offset Litho.

Photography and design is by Jack Blake and Barbara Salvadori. Print was handled by Arthur Stitt at Calverts. A most interesting project and publication.
