Are you a parent ...?

Here's an interesting project which I thought you might like to see...

Regular readers of this blog will be aware of some of the projects which I have featured which have been funded by Kickstarter. Lorna and Daniel Freytag contacted me about this fun project which is on Kickstarter right now.
In their words:
We're a mum and dad team called HeyWow! working from the small seaside town of Oban on the north-west coast of Scotland with our two little highland monsters (aged 2 and 4). Twelve months ago we had the crazy idea of creating our own personalised children's books, to bring a bit more WOW to kids lives. Our aim was to create something vibrant, well designed and exciting that parents could enjoy too! How hard can that be??? Ha! Nearly one year later (in between caring for the kids) and after lots of brain storming, cups of tea, sketching, tea, emails, business plans, photo shoots, more tea, Skype calls and many many late nights, we're now ready to reveal our first picture book... 'In the City'.

Freytag Anderson - Recent projects & insights

Here's a simple but very effective piece of self promotion by Glasgow based studio Freytag Anderson. The mailing arrives in a cellophane bag, with it's contents clearly visible.

The contents include a 20pp newspaper 380x289mm, which actually is a newspaper, printed on newsprint by Newspaper Club. If you aren't familiar with Newspaper Club, it is a great resource - artwork is uploaded digitally and publications are grouped together and printed at the same time on a large newspaper press. A very economical way of producing print - although there are limitations, such as the small matter of the paper - it's newsprint or newsprint! ...so don't even bother about asking for anything else! There are digital versions available as well for shorter runs. All in all they are a great resource. Newspaper Club are based in Glasgow although they operate globally. You can see them here: http://www.newspaperclub.com/
The A5 portrait, 4pp wrap is printed on Colorset Indigo 270gsm. It is printed using white ink on an HP Indigo press, which is a digital printing press. Some, but not all presses are equiped with the facility for printing white ink.
The white ink is very effective. What is interesting is that because of the way an HP Indigo press works, it can keep on laying pass on pass of white on top, so the density of white ink is contollable and as you can see from this example, it is an excellent result. It was printed by Pureprint.
The combination of a cost effective newspaper and a digitally (but highly innovative) printed piece, provides an economical solution to mass production of printed literature.

The publication is produced by Freytag Anderson. You may remember that back in June I wrote about them on this blog as they had been awarded with four Drum awards including Scottish Design Agency of the Year 2014:

Award success for Freytag Anderson

Congratulations to Freytag Anderson. At the annual Scottish Design awards held last week in Glasgow, Freytag Anderson walked away with four awards including Scottish Design Agency of the Year 2014.

The annual event was judged by an esteemed panel including Innocent Drinks Dan Germain, Lewis Moberly’s Mary Lewis, Stephen Royle of The Chase and Smith & Milton’s Steven Anderson.

The annual event hosted by The Drum celebrates the best in Scottish design. Held at Glasgow’s Radisson Blu, they were awarded the Chairman’s Award for Design, Best Corporate Identity, Best Packaging design and the aformentioned Scottish Design Agency of the Year. Have a look at their great work for yourselves: http://www.scottishdesignawards.com/results

It was lovely to receive an email saying the following "This is an incredible result for a business as young as ours and off course we couldn't have done it without the help of our great clients, studio collaborators Matt Burns, Shaun Woods and Liam Rutherford, our suppliers, family and friends. We'd like to take this opportunity to say thanks to you all."

Freytag Anderson have appeared on this blog many times and we are pleased to have worked with them on projects including their lovely work for the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh. Congratulations to Daniel and Greig for this fantastic achievement

ALSO - The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were also honoured for their heroic efforts to save the majority of the Glasgow School of Art's iconic Mackintosh building and its contents after a fire in late May - well done to all the lads and lassies involved.

Peter Doig - No Foreign Lands

This is the literature and private view invitation for a major exhibition titled 'No Foreign Lands' devoted to one of Scotland's most internationally-renowned artists working today Peter Doig. Works from the last ten years were shown in this first major exhibition in the country of his birth held at the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh, last year.
The invitations are printed on our Omnia 320gsm duplexed to make 640gsm ...and as you can see, beautifully reproduces the detail of the scene in Trinidad. This invitation is a 2pp, portrait, A5 (210x148mm) format and is printed offset litho.

To go with the show, there is a superb 8pp concertina leaflet, size 235x170mm printed on our Omnia 120gsm.
The colour reproduction is strong and vivid and the whole publication has a matt, tactile look and feel which works perfectly with the artwork.
...for interest, here is a close-up of the duplexed invitation which is around 1mm thick:
The invitation is printed in one colour (blue) on the reverse and the name DOIG is hot foil blocked in matt white foil. Omnia foils beautifully as it has a high bulk and flattens out leaving the foiled type, smooth and slightly de-bossed.
You can read more about the exhibition here:

Design and Art direction is by Freytag Anderson, a Glasgow based studio run by creative partners Daniel Freytag and Greig Anderson.

Printing is by J. Thompson Colour Printers in Glasgow

John Bellany: A Passion For Life

This is a private view invitation for a major exhibition titled 'A Passion for Life' devoted to one of Scotland’s most outstanding contemporary artists John Bellany.  Works from a career spanning over fifty years have been brought together in this retrospective exhibition also celebrating his 70th birthday year held at the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh, last year. On display were paintings, watercolours, drawings and prints, many of which have rarely, if ever, been exhibited.
The invitations which are printed on our Omnia 320gsm and which (as you can see) faithfully reproduces the detail and of Bellany's work.

This invitation is a 4pp, portrait, A5 (210x148mm) format and is printed offset litho. The colour reproduction is strong and vivid and the whole invitation has a matt, tactile look and feel.
The inside of the invite is printed with a flat red solid with reversed out type. Again, the red solid is dead flat, tactile and looks great.
You can read more about the exhibition here:

Design and Art direction is by Freytag Anderson, a Glasgow based studio run by creative partners Daniel Freytag and Greig Anderson. A beautifully executed piece of work.

Printed by J. Thompson Colour Printers, who are one of Scotland's leading printers (who co-incidentally have a stunning array of printing presses)
