Jobs from the past - Number 23

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by...

The Small Creature - British Heart Foundation (2008)

Hat-Trick Design created a sensitive and honest identity programme aimed at children who have suffered a bereavement due to heart disease - surely one of the most difficult subjects to address. Hat-Trick and the BHF worked closely with Katrice Horsley, a professional storyteller who developed a children's story with multi sensory dimensions, to reflect what happens when a child loses someone close to them.

The story features a character called 'The Small Creature', who encounters a number of friends who go through a range of emotions including sadness, anger, loneliness and bewilderment. The character is produced as a felt toy in a range of colours to represent these emotions.

The finished piece (which includes the toy and the printed literature) is packed in a cloth bag containing a kit of parts which were the inspiration for the design - the toy, the story, a CD version and exercises to help overcome grief.

The picture below shows the items of literature plus the felt toy:
The picture below shows the cloth bag, the felt toy and the story book. The cover of the story book  is printed on our Flockage Litho 250gsm (our litho printable furry paper!) which as you might imagine, perfectly complements the toy and the illustration.
...and to complete the branding, the small creature even made an appearance on the mailing carton.

The superb illustrations are by Becky Sutherland - and to be honest the pics and description on her site are a lot better than I've achieved! so have a look at this link:

The project won a DesignWeek Benchmark Award in 2009 - and deservedly so.

The campaign was designed by Hat-Trick. Creative director on the project was Jim Sutherland, Senior Designer was Mark Wheatcroft. The design manager at BHF who worked on this campaign is Louise Kyme. When I spoke to Mark Wheatcroft about this project, he remarked that this particular job could genuinely be described as a real team effort - everyone all pulled together in the most extraordinary way - a reflection on the gravity of the subject, I shouldn't wonder.

Hat-Trick is 10

When you get an invitation as good as this to a party, you know it's going to be a good one!

Hat-Trick celebrated their 10th Birthday by throwing a party at their lovely studio last Thursday evening and very kindly invited me. It was a great evening, fun was had by all as I think the (rather poor) pics will show!

...and I even managed to get a picture of the lesser spotted Harriet Devoy standing under the "COMMIT NO NUISANCE" poster! - pure gold.
Thanks to Jim Sutherland and Gareth Howat for inviting me and involving me in some of their projects over the last ten years - and to all the staff at Hat-Trick, past and present.

PS all guests were given a lovely little book as a keepsake called "in brief" showing ten years of work - it's 40mm thick - and very nice, thank you.

TYPOGRAPHIC Playing Cards

This has to be one of the most interesting jobs of the year from a typographical point of view.

It's a self initiated project by Jim Sutherland at Hat-Trick who has produced some absolutely spectacular visual imagery and iconography by just using letterforms. Each card uses a different typeface.

I'll let the images do the talking...
The cards were printed on one sheet of B2 (520x720mm) board in two colours. The cards were then die cut out of the sheet. However, at the same time they also made posters using the full size sheets and these were "debossed" with an impession where the cut should be (as above) which look amazing.

The material (which is why Jim called us in the first place) had to be right. Substantial, but not too heavy and flicky was the order of the day. We supplied our Altura Gloss 330gsm which is just right (I think!)
The print production and finishing has been superbly excecuted by Boss. All the elements have been really well finished including the box which is solid, square and just as a box containing playing cards should look and feel like!
Below are some of the sketches which show the work in progress.
This was a really nice project to have been involved with and it's great that there are companies which are prepared to spend some of their own time and money producing some really well crafted self initiated work.

I'm a bit short of file copies of the cards but I have a few posters left so if you ask really nicely, I might send you one!

The landscape is a picture - literally!

This is an amazing job which just demonstrates how a highly creative concept, really well executed, can produce an excellent piece of literature.

This project is designed to promote a massive site to developers. Hat-Trick came up with the concept of creating massive graphic images actually using and in the landscape. Earthworks were realised by Willerby Landscapes and the fantastic photography is by Paul Grundy.

Size of the piece is 290x390mm, Portrait. It has a 4pp cover on Omnia 320gsm and the text is divided into two 16pp sections, the front photographic section is printed on Omnia 150gsm and the "plans" section is printed on Redeem 100% Recycled 80gsm.

Creative Directors on the project were Jim Sutherland and Gareth Howat, the lead designer was Mark Wheatcroft.

The back section pages (plans) are below.

It has been superbly printed by Boss Print. Run was 500 copies.

Land Securities

As part of "The Great British Summer" promotion, Hat-Trick is producing a series of leaflets for events being held at the New Street Square retail development by Land Securities.

Each event is based on a sporting occasion and includes
free live outdoor screenings including Wimbledon and The Ashes.

The leaflets are being printed in one colour on Colorset (100% Recycled) 120gsm. The one shown here is printed on Colorset Amethyst.

Lovely illustrations with modest amount of print, really uses the material well and will be really distinctive against a pile of "busy" four colour leaflets shouting for attention!
