Jobs from the past - Number 158

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and this one is from 2015...

This is the season's promotional literature for Wrangler’s Spring Summer 2015 collection for women. Live in Denim is Wrangler’s new collection for women which incorporates Shape Keeper jeans using Lycra® and dualFX® to create stretch denim and silk soft jeans which achieves it's delicate touch through Cotton-Tencel® denim blends.

This 10pp concertina brochure is 190x135mm, expanding to 190x675mm. It is printed in CMYK offset litho on our Omnia, White FSC 320gsm and is printed and finished beautifully.

Although this is a simple publication, it's often the simple jobs which don't get the attention to detail. This is well creased and folded square which is just perfect.

Omnia was chosen because it would work with the rich detail that is present in the images but that would still give a natural look and tactile feel. As you can see from images, some of the photography is quite dark, but there is no loss of detail, which is what can often happen printing on an uncoated paper - fleshtones look superb!

Art direction and design is by JJ Marshall Associates. Creative Director is Jethro Marshall and thanks to Jethro for sending file copies and a note...

Excellent print and finishing is by Principal Colour based in Paddock Wood, Kent.

Studio Nicholson S|S 2015

Studio Nicholson is a contemporary design studio based in London. Creative Director and founder Nick Wakeman is obsessive about beautiful cloth and draws influences from Japanese and Italian culture. The Studio Nicholson brand embodies a total design ethos using refined materials, which is conveyed in this beautifully produced lookbook for the Spring|Summer 2015 collection printed on our Offenbach Bible.

Size is 240 x 190mm, portrait. It is a 24pp 'self-cover' is printed offset litho in CMYK on our Offenbach Bible 60gsm, the lightweight paper works exquisitely with the images.
There is a combination of images printed in full colour and images in 'monochrome' but which are also printed out of CMYK.
The above image is the centre spread. This publication is saddle stitched using a white coated wire which is a lovely touch and works well. A nice, well considered finish.
The image below shows a stack of spines with the white wire stitching (staples)
The whole publication is all printed on our Offenbach Bible 60gsm ...and it looks and feels absolutely gorgeous - it flops and folds in a delightful way when handling the publication as I hope these images demonstrate:

MCU SS2015

This is the lookbook for Spring|Summer 2015 collection for clothing brand MasterCraft Union. The collection majors on hand-woven denim from a family-run mill in Okayama and is finished in the mountains of Shimane. This season they have introduced MCU Paper Denim, which is constructed of exclusive fabric, using traditionally milled Japanese paper within the weave of the denim!
The whole publication (making this a 'self-cover') is printed on our Offenbach Bible 60gsm, the lightweight paper works with the Japanese heritage associated with the brand. The size is just sub A5 (210x145mm) portrait.

The text of the whole book is 'French Folded' - this is where the folded edges are on the foredge of the book, as in the picture below:
As a result of choosing Offenbach Bible 60gsm, this piece of literature feels totally special - a fantastic piece of print reproduction and print finishing. It has 22pp or printed sides (which I would normally describe as 22 x 4pp french folded sections) - this actually makes 44pp but because the other side is unprinted and the open ends are bound, therefore each 4pp = 2pp. It's a bit tricky but if you think about it, it makes sense. French folding with a material like Offenbach Bible feels fantastic because the weight of the material lets the pages flop and flow beautifully, as you can see from the spreads below
...you can see the way the text pages rolling and flopping over, flowing superbly.
The binding is 'stab stitching'. This is where the staple (or wire) stabs through the whole text of the publication, unlike saddle stitching, where the staple goes through the spine and turns over in the centre spread. Below shows the stab stitched spine.
Another lovely touch is the white wire used for the staples:

This is the lookbook for the launch collection of clothing brand MasterCraft Union. The collection includes hand-made denim from Japan together with leather from Tuscany. The hand-woven denim is from a family-run mill in Okayama and is finished in the mountains of Shimane. Every season new artisan products will be added from the best master craftsmen around the world.

The publication is a 16pp self cover printed on our Offenbach Bible 60gsm, the lightweight paper works with the Japanese heritage associated with the brand. The size is A5 (210x148mm) portrait and is saddle stitched.
Printed offset litho in CMYK
The booklet is inserted in a 'transparency' bag which completes the retro look and feel of the publication.
Another lovely touch is the use of the black wire stitching.
