2016 Christmas Card by S-T

Thank you to everyone who has kindly sent me cards this festive season. I've received a wide selection of really lovely designs and beautifully produced cards, not all on our paper, of course! ...but many are.

This one particular card, I did think I would write about, because not only is it printed on our Colorset Crimson 270gsm (100% Recycled) but it is printed in an unconventional way. The card is designed by London based studio, Design by St. Titled "Who will you be this Christmas?" it is an infographic flow diagram which is very funny and well written.
The finished size of the card is A6 (105x148mm) and it is an 8pp concertina format.
The card is printed in just one colour - white. The result is fantastically effective and I looked at it to see how it has been achieved:
Was it matt hot foil blocking? Silkscreen? HP Indigo digital white?
...Nope, none of the above!
In fact, it is printed by a Scottish printer called Kestrel Press based in Irvine. They have a digital press which is toner based and this is the result - in just one pass! The result is truly superb and as I discovered from speaking to Graeme Ferguson at Kestrel, achieved at a much more economical price in comparison with the processes I listed above.

Big Book Bonanza Catalogue 2016

The Big Book Bonanza is the showcase of new books from Harper Collins and this is the 2016 catalogue. I wrote about the  bewitching invitation for the launch at the Ham Yard Hotel here.
The catalogue is 148x265mm, Landscape and is saddle stitched.
The catalogue has a 4pp cover with a 56pp text, all printed on Colorset Natural 350gsm (cover) and 120gsm (text) printed offset litho in CMYK throughout.
The illustrations commissioned for the catalogue reproduce superbly on the Colorset Natural and is bright and vivid, the colours really lifting off the page.
Bearing in mind this job is printed on Colorset Natural, which is our 100% recycled coloured paper range which doesn't have any particular surface enhancements for printing, the areas of solid CMYK black look amazing:
The 4pp cover is blind embossed, where the text and filigree for the "garden gate", which is where on the invitation, the same area was lasercut - unfortunately this isn't something that you can photograph!
Colorset is a bulky paper, so with a 56pp text, this is about as much as you can really use with a saddle stitched binding. It works, but if it were any more pages, it would be too "gappy" in the centre.
Art direction and design is by London based studio, Design by St. Creative Partners are Steve Fenn and Tom Pollard. The excellent print and production is by Hampshire based Senator Press.

Big Book Bonanza 2016

The Big Book Bonanza is the showcase of new books from Harper Collins and this is the bewitching invitation for the launch that was held this April at the Ham Yard Hotel.
The invitation is quite literally a gatefold! The delightfully lasercut gates are hinged over the inner invitation which is tipped onto the back panel of the main invite.
Finished size of the invitation is 150x265mm with the inner card being 128x245mm. It is printed on Colorset Natural 350gsm (100% Recycled) throughout.

Below shows the corner cuts where the inner card sits, holding it in place.
Below image shows outside back cover with the corner slits.

The reproduction on the Colorset Natural is bright and vivid, the colours really lifting off the page.
The lasercut gates are wonderfully crisp and really set this invitation off.

Christmas card by S-T

Thank you to everyone who has kindly sent me cards this Christmas. I've received a wide selection of really lovely designs and beautifully produced cards, not all on our paper, of course! ...but many are.

This one particular card, I did think I would write about, because not only is it printed on our Colorset Bright Red 270gsm (100% Recycled) but it is printed in an unconventional way. The card is designed by London based studio, Design by St. The size of the card is A6 (105x148mm) landscape format and is hinged at the top of the card.

The card is printed in just one colour - white. The result is fantastically effective and I looked at it to see how it has been achieved:

YCN Professional Awards

Yesterday evening I was lucky to be at the YCN Professional Awards party at Shoreditch House...
YCN, which originally launched as the Young Creative Network in 2001 with their renowned student awards has evolved and is now a membership group under the title You Can Now (YCN). The student awards are still alive and well but YCN introduced the Professional Awards which reflected the membership's work and achievements. This year there were 21 awards given.

I was kindly invited by Design by St, who won the 'Design for Print award' for the 26 Characters project, printed using Colorset 120gsm and Offenbach Bible 60gsm and printed by Push. I wrote about this project earlier in the year: http://justinsamazingworldatfennerpaper.blogspot.co.uk/2014/05/26-characters.html
L-R above are Stef Bushell, Tom Pollard, Steve Fenn from Design by St and Laura Hunter. Steve is holding the very heavy, shiny, golden and impressive award, pictured below.

You can read more about the individual award winners here: http://www.ycn.org/awards/news/906-our-ycn-awards-winners-for-2014
Danny Kirk from Push with Tom Pollard - and below is Danny's face reflected in the award ...a true reflection of his role in the project!
Thanks to Design by St for inviting me, to YCN and Nick Defty for being such excellent and generous hosts and Shoreditch House for providing such an excellent venue.

26 Characters

This is a very special publication published by 26, which is a writers' collective founded in 2002. The project is to celebrate and demonstrate the power of stories to inspire learning - especially for the young.
The size is 170x120mm portrait, saddle stitched. It has a 4pp cover and a 64pp text. There are five different colour covers, all printed on our Colorset 120gsm. The text is printed on our lovely Offenbach Bible 60gsm, which combined with the light cover makes for a compact, light feel which flows beautifully in the hand as you turn the pages. As you will see from the images below, the reproduction of the illustrations is simply superb.
The writers who contributed to the project were each allocated a letter of the alphabet to start their poem with. To bring the poems to life and make the book visually exciting, 26 illustrators were invited to respond to each poem including the letter in their image, with great results...
It's worth pointing out that although the different colour covers had no definitive meaning, they were just run on different colours - it's a great way of creating a 'series' at little or no extra cost.
Design is by Clerkenwell based studio, Design by St. Creative Partners are Steve Fenn and Tom Pollard and the designer is Stef Bushell.
Printing is by Push and the repruduction on our Offenbach Bible 60gsm is truly scrumptious! You can read more about the project on the 26 website below

SHOP invitation

This is a lovely invitation that I picked up some file copies of this week. It is A2 size folding down to an A6 finished size. Printed in just two colours (specials - silver and blue) on one side only on our lovely Offenbach Bible. As you can see, the pantone silver 877U, looks great and actually looks metallic silver!
The invitation is to the launch of the new Global Blue website and international shopping guides.
Design is by Steve Fenn and Tom Pollard, at their Clerkenwell based studio: Design by St

The Offenbach Bible 60gsm was printed by R.Young & Son.
