Jobs from the past - Number 156

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and this one is from 2015...

Aaaaaaaaah! film poster 2015

This is the promotional poster for Steve Oram's directorial feature debut, Aaaaaaaah! (that's eight "A's"). The film has been written and directed by Steve Oram and the cast includes Julian Barratt, Toyah Wilcox, Julian Rhind Tutt and Holli Dempsey.

This poster is A2 size (594x420mm) and is silk-screen printed in six colours, a combination of tonal work and solid colours - the zip is printed in shiny metallic silver. It is produced using our Colorset, Bright Red 270gsm.
The posters were printed to coincide with the film's premiere in Leicester Square as part of Frightfest 2015. More information on the film can be found at both the Rook Films and Lincoln Studios sites. You can see the trailer below...
There is a review of the film here: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2015/sep/10/aaaaaaaah-review-satire-of-beastly-behaviour
The prints were screen-printed by Gary Parselle at Brighton based silkscreen studio, The Private Press, and the above picture is from from the studio when they were in the drying rack.

Design is by Jay Shaw. Above is a picture of Steve Oram and Holli Dempsey pictured with the poster at the premiere!

PEACE – Anthony Burrill for War Child

The Private Press have collaborated with Anthony Burrill to produce a poster to raise funds for War Child UK. The first two print runs sold out, selling 250 so far meaning they have raised £12,500 for War Child.
Due to overwhelming demand they are now printing another 100 prints and they will be posted in the first week of April. 100% of sales of this print go directly to charity.

In the last week more than 1 million people have fled across the Ukrainian border with many more expected to come. War Child have been quick to respond – their teams are already on the ground working to understand the impact in children and get them vital aid and psychological care – fast. From 1 March – 31 May 2022, War Child are running their ‘Unlock a Generation’ appeal in which donations will be matched pound for pound by the UK Government.

This means the purchase of a print right now could go twice as far. Your donation will help support the unfolding crisis in Ukraine, as well as places like Afghanistan, and match funding from the UK government will go towards Yemen, where millions of children are still in desperate need of protection from war and conflict.

The print measures 50x70cm and is signed by Anthony in an open edition, and features black ink printed by hand onto Shiro Echo, White 250gsm a 100% recycled paper.

You can read more and buy the print HERE.

OK by Supermundane

I've just received a beautifully produced silkscreen print from Gary Parselle at The Private Press.

This print is one of the series called Editions which is Gary's own collection of exclusive, hand-pulled limited edition screen prints, featuring a carefully chosen selection of artworks by leading contemporary artists. Working collaboratively with the artists, Gary aims to use this series to showcase the possibilities of creative screen printing using interesting inks, papers and techniques.
This print is by Supermundane: “I’m a big fan of screen printing and how physical a process it is. I’ve had the pleasure of working with The Private Press on a few projects in the past so I was excited to be asked to be involved in this new project. My print is part of my on going ‘You Made This’ project which explores our fears and desires. This time I’ve hidden the term OK in there that represents the word and a mouth and body of sorts at the same time."
The print is silkscreen printed in three colours onto our Colorset (100% Recycled) White 270gsm board. The yellow and blue inks overlap and combine to make green in select areas.

The below image shows before and after on the drying rack! On the left - yellow and blue, on the right - overprinting black.
The size of the prints is A2 (420x594mm) and is a limited edition of just 50, signed and numbered by the artist. My thanks to Gary for sending me this print and his lovely note...
The Private Press is a small Brighton-based screen printing company, established in the summer of 2013. The studio was established by Gary Parselle, who has more than 10 years of screen printing experience. Before setting up the Brighton studio, Gary worked extensively in some of London's most renowned graphic design and advertising agencies where he specialised in print production and this is where I met him (...at Interbrand I think). This is the reason that Gary has an in-depth knowledge of print, paper and finishing techniques.

The Private Press specialises in high quality, hand pulled screen prints for artists, illustrators and graphic designers. Below are the other prints from the 'Editions' series...

The Cloud Eaters

This is a recently produced silkscreen print of an artwork called The Cloud Eaters. It is by artist Joe Webb, who works mainly in the medium of collage.
The print has been created using 6 colours and had an iridescent varnish layer put down first. The print is an A1 size and is printed onto our StarFine White 300gsm.

The print has been produced by Gary Parselle at The Private Press. Gary is a collaborative silkscreen printer who works with artists to try and achieve the best possible representation of the artists work in sympathy with the original ...and he must be doing a good job as artists are queuing up to work with him!

The below image shows the framed print on display at the Saatchi Gallery in London.

Pearlfest 2016

The other week, the glamorous reception area at Pearlfisher was turned into a pop up silkscreen print studio.
Gary Parselle from The Private Press set up his temporary silkscreen print workshop, so the whole creative team got their hands dirty experiencing hand silk screen-printing for themselves.
Just using a few colours, plus a few different screens and our lovely Colorset 100% recycled paper.
...and hey presto, lots of different results
...we were asked to supply a selection of different colours from our Colorset range in 270gsm. For those of you not familiar with this collection, Colorset has 26 colours and is made from 100% Recycled fibres. All colours are available in 120, 270 and 350gsm. Amongst other uses, it's become a firm favourite with Silkscreen printers. The colours you see here are Deep Orange, Mango, Lemon, Lime, Aquamarine, Magenta, Pink Ice, Ash, Solar, Nero, White and Natural.
The workshop was run by Gary Parselle from The Private Press who's studio is based in Brighton. The event was arranged by Jenny Cairns and Managing Director Darren Foley.
Small scale events like this are such a great idea. It exposes a whole team to a shared creative experience and with a "pop up" like this, no need to travel!

Why Make Sense?

These are the tour posters for a band called Hot Chip. The tour follows their latest album Why Make Sense? This new LP features the acclaimed singles Huarache Lights and Need You Now. Recorded in Oxfordshire and London and produced by Hot Chip with Mark Ralph and mixed by the band, David Wrench (FKA Twigs, Caribou) and Jimmy Douglass (Timbaland, Aaliyah). The album features guest appearances from De La Soul’s Posdnuos and Scritti Politti’s Green Gartside (Love Is The Future), as well as live instrumentation and backing vocals from touring band members Sarah Jones and Rob Smaughton.
The A2 size posters are silkscreened in three colours on each side and the inks have been changed to produce four different colour versions as you can see in the below picture.
The posters are printed on our StarFine White 300gsm and the result is simply stunning - depth of colour is superb:
The posters are designed by Nick Relph. He also designed the album covers, which due to a unique algorithm, randomly alters each album cover resulting in each cover being different. You can view the artwork, designed by Nick Relph, here: http://www.dominorecordco.com/whymakesense/artwork/

The Private Press at Brand Union

A couple of weeks ago, the team at Brand Union, London got their hands dirty in the all-agency meeting to learn about and experience hand silk screen-printing.

...but first of all they had to climb into boiler suits and make an origami printer's hat!
Gary Parselle from The Private Press set up a temporary silkscreen print workshop in the Brand Union Studio.
He provided absolutely everything to ensure this was a truly fulfilling, creative process which involved absolutely everyone.
...and of course he also needed some paper! -so we were asked to supply a selection of different colours from our Colorset range in 270gsm. For those of you not familiar with this collection, Colorset has 26 colours and is made from 100% Recycled fibres. All colours are available in 120, 270 and 350gsm. Amongst other uses, it's become a firm favourite with Silkscreen printers.
Below are the fruits of their days printing, hung out to dry...
Below is an image showing the printed results in the window of their Smithfield based studio:
The event was arranged by Creative Director, Clare Styles. What a fantastic thing for an agency to do. This is a truly engaging, interactive and creative activity for the whole company to get involved with - far more fun that a team building day paintballing!

Around the World

‘Around the World’ is a set of six A3 prints by Tom Love. These screen prints are reproductions of airline luggage tags from the 1950s, produced as striking pieces of wall art
Here are some words about the project, by the designer, Tom Love:

"My Around The World Series features six original airline tag designs. From such airlines as the iconic PANAM to Quantas, depicting the four corners of the world and celebrating the new found accessibility of foreign lands, which commercial airlines bought to the general public throughout the 1950s and beyond.

These designs symbolise the golden age of travel: where privileged passengers were whisked off on journeys around the world. Landing in exotic destinations, where they would encounter for the first time, exotic cultures and cuisine and incredible landmarks and landscapes; This indulgent and pioneering era of discovery and adventure has left behind these wonderful relics of an era gone by.
There is something very special about the designs of these tags. Now viewed in an entirely new context, decades since when they were originally tied around baggage handles and sent on their merry way through airport carousels. It's this strong sense of nostalgia and adventure, as well as their striking typography and graphic design that inspired me to start collecting them, and now to re-create and share them with you as over-sized pieces of art."
The project was successfully funded through Kickstarter and here's the original link:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/904917574/around-the-world-six-limited-edition-screen-prints
Tom Love is an accomplished designer who has worked with many of the top design agencies and is currently a senior designer at SalterBaxter. Tom has recently started producing his own limited editions and this is the third project he has completed, so far.

The prints have been screen-printed in 3 colours by Gary Parselle at Brighton based silkscreen studio, The Private Press, and these are the pictures from the studio when they were in the drying racks:
The paper chosen for the project is our Flora, Betulla in 350gsm. Flora is a recycled paper (and FSC accredited) with an overtly recycled look and feel - it has natural, deliberately visible inclusions and yet still prints beautifully. It truly enhances the look and feel of a project such as this where the visual look of the material makes a massive difference to the aged look of the finished piece

Thanks to Tom Love and Gary Parselle at the Private Press for sending me the images and giving me all the information.
