Puck Collected #2

Puck Collective is an evolving group of creatives from around the world. Founded in 2010 by 5 illustrators and artists, Puck has grown into one of the largest and most revered illustration collectives in the UK. What makes Puck unique is that every year they launch a call for entries in order to replenish and invigorate the group with fresh work, new ideas and exciting creatives. Each year, the roster will have a limited amount of spaces, trying to bring in the right mix of people to produce shows and exhibitions, create print runs, small press comics and generally have a whole load of fun in the process. During that year all members contribute towards the publication "Puck Collected" showcasing the groups art, talent and creativity in a beautifully produced limited edition run.

...and this is Puck Collected #2, titled Cosmic
It is a collection of 16 x A6 cards. They are held together in a wonderful folded envelope which is Riso printed in two colour - wonderful fluorescent colour.
These are launched once a year, with new content every issue. The cards (bar one) were printed Offset Litho, on a Heidelberg B2 5 colour Speedmaster at Calverts in London. One of the cards (Marylou Favre) was digitally on a Konica Minolta KM C1100 to give a 'shiny' effect.
The cards are all printed on our Neptune Unique SoftWhite 300gsm, The choice was for an off white board which would work better with the artworks rather than a harsh white. The reverse of the cards are all printed in one colour (blue)
The pack makes a thickness of 5mm.
The collective also spun off to found Puck Studio, an exhibition services and print studio based in East London. Visit the link for further details.

The job was printed and finished by Bethnal Green based print cooperative, Calverts. If you haven't come across them, maybe you should have a look. Unusually for a print company, they are a worker's cooperative, therefore the management, tasks and profits are all shared equitably - almost sounds too good to be true! Production was handled by Samuel Rogers at Calverts

Frieze Film 2012

Frieze Film is a programme of artist films screened to coincide with Frieze London. Curated by Sarah McCrory, in 2012 the commissions included five new films by Bertrand Dezoteux, Patricia Esquivias, Jimmy Merris, John Smith and Wu Tsang & Nana Oforiatta-Ayim. This piece of promotional literature is the touring programme and works as both an information leaflet and a promotional poster (front and back film stills by Linder)
The size is  A5, landscape (148x210mm) and is a 16pp broadsheet format folding out to 592x420mm. The material chosen is our Avebury Recycled Wove 135gsm, which is a neutral white shade and very tactile. The material suits the muted colours in the film stills and is beautifully tactile.

Camberwell College of Arts - BA Hons Sculpture 2011

This is a piece of literature produced for the BA (Hons) Sculpture 2011 course at Camberwell College of Arts.  It is A5 (148x210mm) size and is saddle stitched. It has a lightweight cover which is cut 40mm short at the head, which opens up, like so...

4pp cover on Neptune Unique 120gsm, 20pp text on our recycled Brand X FSC 150gsm which has a warmer, natural, shade which contrasts well with the whiter, lightweight cover material. Cover is printed in one colour (black) both sides, text is CMYK throughout. Nice clean job and fairly economical to produce.
The project was designed by Joe Hales who was working in conjunction with Josie and Julia who are two students on the course. It was printed by Calverts Press in London.
...and thanks to Josie and Julia for their lovely note and for taking the time to send me some file copies.

Carbon Rations!

I've only just received a copy of this very nice little job which was produced last year for the Copenhagen Climate conference.

Ration Me Up is a monthly Carbon Ration Book created by The Ministry of Trying to Do Something About It (and designed by thomas.matthews). It was launched at NEF's 'the Bigger Picture Festival of Independence'.
http://www.theministryoftryingtodosomethingaboutit.org/

Thomas Matthews designed this monthly ration book to teach each us all of the true cost of our day to day necessities and habits by calculating personal monthly carbon usage.

The covers of all the ration books were produced on a variety of different colours of Colorset 270gsm which were all 'leftovers' from another job at Calverts Press. Here they all are at the exhibition:
The Ministry of Trying to Do Something About It are:

Clare Patey – Artist
thomas.matthews – Communication design
Cathy Wren – Installation Designer
Dr Victoria Johnson – Research
Corrina Cordon – Project Manager
Jonathan Atkinson – Project development and management
Jenny Hayton – Costume Advisor
Tim Mitchell – Construction

UCL Admission of New Fellows 2010

This is a special piece of literature from Studio Special!

This publication has been produced for UCL and is for the admission of new fellows at the ceremony held this summer. The design uses a "rolled up scroll" motif in multiple colours, together with a warm grey background. The cover has been very subtely hot foil blocked in silver foil.
The job is an unusual 180x250mm size, portrait format. It has an 8pp cover with 135mm flaps and a 24pp text. It is printed on Omnia 200gsm cover and 150gsm text which in my opinion is absolutely the right weight  relationship for text and cover if it's an 8pp cover.

Design is by David Lovelock and Sally Oldfield at Studio Special based in Hatton Garden in London. Print is by Calverts in London and it's been very nicely done as that warm grey is not the easiest colour to get consistency with all over the sheet.
And thanks to Sally for the lovely note:
