Jobs from the past - Number 157

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good work from years gone by and this one is from 2013...

This is a series of three lookbooks showing the Summer TU clothing range from Sainsbury's - Womenswear, Menswear and Childrenswear.

Size of each brochure is 210x148mm, portrait, self cover. They are also all stitched with white stitching wire which is a nice touch
Each of the catalogues is printed on Marazion Ultra 115gsm and is a self cover. Menswear and Childrenswear are 20pp and the Womenswear is 24pp. Transparent plastic wallets were manufactured to hold all three books when sent out as a set, although they were also used individually.
For readers not familiar with Marazion Ultra, it's a fully coated paper but it really does have a dead flat MATT surface. There are many papers on the market which profess to be matt (and some which incorporate the word matt in the name, but aren't!) ...but this really is - and if you don't believe me, please ask for a sample.
Art direction and design is by London based agency Exposure, who specialise in fashion PR. Creative Director at Exposure was Simon Shaw. Hayley Inglis was the producer at Exposure who oversaw the project.

The job was produced by the Inspired Thinking Group (ITG). Print is by Bristol based Apple Litho, who have sadly since gone out of business.

Cath Kidston - 25 years

This year Cath Kidston celebrates their 25th anniversary. The brand was established in London’s Holland Park, with Cath selling car boot finds and vintage fabric. When the business became more established, she began to create her own Modern Vintage designs, her first being floral ironing boards and statement wallpaper.

Almost 25 years later, the brand now has over 200 stores worldwide and has become synonymous with classic British design, internationally famous for unique floral prints and bright, playful patterns.

Cath Kidston have produced this lovely little pocketbook sized booklet to celebrate in 25 chapters. The size is A6 (148x105mm) portrait and is saddle stitched. The 4pp cover is on our Omnia 150gsm and 52pp text is on Marazion Ultra 90gsm, which means that it sits nice and flat.
The job is printed offset litho throughout and the cover is printed CMYK plus a silver. On most traditional uncoated papers, metallic inks can look flat and silver can just look a bit grey, but as I hope the above image demonstrates, the metallic silver really does look metallic on Omnia.

The text is printed in colour, also digitally printed on our Marazion Ultra 90gsm. This is a lightweight paper with a matt coating but which has an amazing bulk, tactile feel and excellent opacity for 90gsm. It feels just right for this project, because it just flops over wonderfully and sits nice and flat.

The reproduction on the Marazion Ultra is exceptionally good, remembering this is a 90gsm paper, as you can see from the detail image below...
The 52pp sits nice and flat:
The saddle stitches are perfectly executed - spine in beautifully creased, no cracking.
Design is by Sarah Mulligan. The job was produced by the Inspired Thinking Group (ITG). Printing is by Pureprint.

Gok Wan for Tu

This is the lookbook for Gok Wan's fifth collection for Sainsbury's Tu clothing label. Gok Wan is the flamboyant fashion expert known for his direct personality and tell-it-how-it is styling advice.

This book is 215x125mm, portrait. It is a casebound, hardcover book with 36pp text. The cover is simply the simplest, yet most stunning part of the job. It is produced using Flockage Colours, Bordeaux 100gsm and you can see just how good it looks from these pictures...

The cover is simply hot foil blocked in two colours, metallic gold and matt black. Although Flockage is an expensive material, on a short run, it certainly creates an effect which is very luxurious and can be cost effective. Although they say you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, you certainly can with this one! (The 32pp text is on an uncoated but I don't know what paper it is)
The job was produced by the Inspired Thinking Group. Print is by Bristol based Apple Litho and the binding is by Diamond Print Finishers.
