Jobs from the past - Number 140

Regular followers of this blog will know that my first post of every month is a "job from the past" so that I can show some of the really good projects from years gone by. Given the sad news announced today that Gap is closing all it's UK retail outlets, I thought I'd show you this superb project for Gap from 2011.

Gap 1969 Premium Jeans - Spring 2011
This lovely look-book was produced to support the 1969 jeans campaign launch by Gap. Founded in 1969 in SanFrancisco in 1969 by Doris and Don Fisher. Gap's original intent was to make it easier for every customer to find a great fitting pair of jeans, a philosophy that lives on today.
Size is A5, portrait. It has a 4pp cover and a 12pp text, printed offset litho CMYK throughout. The text material is printed on Marazion Ultra 115gsm.
Cover is from the popular Hull based company on Colourplan 135gsm with a Buckram emboss. The cover also has a gloss UV varnish on the large 1969. It has a deliberately floppy feel which works really well for the denimy subject!
For readers not familiar with Marazion Ultra, it's a fully coated paper but it really does have a dead flat MATT surface. There are many papers on the market which profess to be matt (and some which incorporate the word matt in the name, but aren't!) ...but this really is - and if you don't believe me, just ask for a sample!

...and here's the clever bit - see below image. The cover means the book works both ways round - one way men/womens, the other kids/baby. Not the first time it's been done but very effectively executed.
Below showing the kids/baby cover...

The job is nicely folded and creased, as you can see from the birsdeye view.
A nice touch is the use of black coloured wire stitching, as you can see below....
Printing is by Absolute Ink who were based in East London but they sadly went bust last year. Art director and designer on the project was Jonathan Baron from Studio Baron.

Baron

***NOT TO BE SOLD TO PERSONS UNDER 18***
Now at the risk of getting my blog blacklisted (..although of course, it could increase my ratings!), here is a piece of literature which I will share with you.

Baron is described as the "Erotic Paperback Magazine for gentlemen and ladies who enjoy a cocktail, chit chatting about modern art, fine dressing and when the lights faint and the gin runs out, become connoisseurs at taking their companion into bed"
The size of the publication is a handy 165x110mm, portrait. It has a 4pp cover with 194pp text and comes in a handy PVC wallet.

The article about Playboy vs Penthouse in the early seventies by Bill Hedley is fascinating and the photography by Dutch photographers Blommers & Schumm, titled Sex Objects (below), is very clever.

You may be wondering if my review of this literature is strictly professional and I can tell you, it most certainly is!  The cover of the magazine is printed on our Redeem 100% Recycled 300gsm which has printed beatifully. Text pages are printed on the printer's "house" gloss magazine paper 80gsm. Print is by Westdale Press.

Editor In Chief is Jonathan Baron, Creative Director: Matthew Holroyd, Consulting Design Director: Tom Watt, Editor: Toby Orton, Art Editor: Ché Zara Blomfield, Contributing Fashion Editor: Joanna Schlenzka, Fashion assistants: Mhairi Graham and Shereena Ghaffor.

Thanks to Jonathan for sending me a copy.

Get one, it's a reasonable £8.00  (...but only if you're over 18!)

Gap 1969

This is a lovely promo piece to support the 1969 jeans campaign launch by Gap earlier in the year.

Size is A5, portrait. It has a 4pp cover and a 12pp text, printed CMYK throughout. The text material is printed on Marazion Ultra 115gsm. Cover is from the popular Hull based company on Colourplan 135gsm with a Buckram emboss. The cover also has a gloss UV varnish on the large 1969. It has a deliberately floppy feel which works really well for the denimy subject!

...and here's the clever bit - see below image. The cover means the book works both ways round - one way men/womens, the other kids/baby. Not the first time it's been done but very effectively executed.
Printing is by Absolute Ink who are based in Clapton in London and who work directly with many of the large brands such as GAP. Art director and designer on the project was Jonathan Baron working in conjunction with the in-house production team at Gap.
...and thanks to Jonathan for sending me some copies.

GAP Corso Como

This piece is for a limited edition that links a US brand, soon debuting in Italy, with a concept store: GAP and 10 Corso Como. The launch was at 2011 Milan Fashion Week.

Garments and accessories are signature GAP, cotton t-shirts, hooded sweatshirts, canvas shopping bags.  The printed motif is the distinctive feature of 10 Corso Como: the pattern with the loops.

The "private view" invitation is for this launch is 145x103mm folding out to 595x415mm. It is formed by a poster which is concertina folded in both directions and then has heavyweight cards mounted on both the front and the back. Confused? ...hopefully the pictures will make it clearer!

The invitation is printed in just one colour using one of the GAP Corso Como collection images. The paper weight used is our lightweight Redeem 100% Recycled in 80gsm and the card mounted front and back is Flora Noce 350gsm.

Printing is by Absolute Ink who are based in Clapton in London and who work directly with many of the large brands such as GAP. Art director and designer on the project was Jonathan Baron working in conjunction with the in-house production team at Gap.
...and thanks to Jonathan for sending me some copies.

Sebastian Magazine

Sebastian is a new biannual magazine from Shoreditch boutique Hostem. It's a beatifully conceived and put together publication - and this is one with a difference as each issue will have a new name - Sebastian exists for this one issue only.

The publication is a 160x240mm, portrait, perfect bound format with 4pp cover and 96pp text. The weight of the text and cover materials combined with the high page count gives it a 9mm spine giving the magazine a substantial, quality feel.

The publication is divided into ten features and as you can see from the pics above and below (courtesy of magculture.com) the design and imagery used throughout the magazine is diverse. The cover is printed on a little known paper of ours called Insize Modigliani in 260gsm - it's a "feltmarked" paper, which has a surface finish a bit like a traditional artists watercolour paper but this material has a coating which means it prints sharp detail. The editor of Magculture described it as "dimpled cover stock" which is rather missing the point but at least it got noticed!

The text paper used is our Redeem 100% Recycled 130gsm.

Art direction is by Jonathan Baron. The editor is Matthew Holroyd. It's been well reviewed on the magazine design blog magculture.com.

Printing is by Pureprint who have made an excellent job of it given some of the very challenging images used.

Look out for the next issue but just don't look out for a magazine called Sebastian again!

Harvey Nichols SS2011

This is the new Spring/Summer lookbook for upmarket retailer Harvey Nichols. In many ways this could be described as being a fairly "conventional" piece of literature, in so far as it is A4 Portrait and that the 24pp text is printed on a fairly typical printers "house" silk. However, there are some features which makes it a really excellent and unusual piece.
The 4pp cover is printed in 1 colour Litho, in silver, on Colorset Dark Grey 270gsm and this is covered in a dustjacket. The dustacket is printed in one side only on our Clervaux 1 sided 110gsm, which is an uncoated material with two sides, a smooth and a rough side. The jacket is cut 25mm short on the head allowing the "real" cover to be seen.
The design of the jacket has Women's fashion on the front and Men's fashion on the reverse. Below shows the inside of the jacket, inside front cover and page 1 of text...
The print and finishing is by Pureprint - and they've achieved an excellent result with the litho silver on the cover (above).

Art direction and design is by Jonathan at Studio-Baron. The job has a look and feel of real quality without it being either too lavish or "over the top"! Thanks to Jonathan for sending me a copy and a lovely note...

GAP 2010

This is a lovely project produced for Gap this Summer. It consists of an invitation and an A5 lookbook.

The "private view" invitation is an A5 size folding out to A3 and is printed in one colour (silver) on our Astralux 90gsm. Astralux is a one sided "cast coated" substrate which means it is an extremely high gloss coated finish on one side with an uncoated reverse. Very nice for a folded invitation and the silver looks great on it.
The accompanying lookbook has a 4pp cover and a 32pp text, A5 portrait, which is saddle stitched with WHITE staples - an excellent detail. Another lovely feature is the cover being cut 25mm short from the foredge with the 2010 printed on the cover and page one of text, lining up. A really nice touch and relatively inexpensive to do...
It uses a combination of Astralux 115gsm for the cover and our Omnia 120gsm for the text which gives a great coated/uncoated contrast (especially with the cover as described above) but the advantage being that the images work really well on the Omnia - printing as well as if they were on a coated material, as you can see....
Printing is by Absolute Ink who are based in Clapton in London and who work directly with many of the large brands. Art director and designer on the project was Jonathan Baron working in conjunction with the in-house production team at Gap and below is his brand spanky new business card:
