DesignWeek Awards 2015

On Thursday I was lucky enough to be at the DesignWeek Awards, held at the Roundhouse in London's Camden Lock. I was kindly invited by Fenton Smith and Bonnie Lo from London print company BOSS, who were also one of the sponsors and printed the awards catalogue. Along with paper industry colleagues Pari Blackbeard (Fedrigoni) and Megan Simpkins (GF Smith) we were joined on a table with some of the other award sponsors. Fenton and Bonnie with Pari pictured below:

The Roundhouse was an excellent venue, with 40 tables packed with the design industry's finest. In total there were twenty awards covering the diverse world of design from graphics, signage, product design, interiors etc.
The awards were hosted by the ever popular Sue Perkins who did a good job of rattling through the categories as rapidly as she could!
Every one of the winners deserves massive congratulations but in particular I must mention Magpie, who were nominated for five awards and scooped three on the night! Pictured below are David Azurdia, Ben Christie and Mike Fischer from Magpie.

Below shows the contents of the excellent goody bag which included the awards catalogue printed by BOSS (paper donated by Antalis) and a cute, bright red Moleskine notebook, supplied by Noted in Style.

It was a great evening - good company and food and my thanks go to BOSS for inviting me and my fellow industry companions!

Time to Reflect

Welcome to 2014!

I've received this lovely 'new year' promotion from London based, Magpie Studio. It's an engraved mirror which is encased in a piece of cork, inviting the recipient to take time to reflect on the year gone by and let's face it, we all need some time to reflect....

The size is 190x200mm and the piece of cork is 12mm thick. The piece of mirrored acrylic is 4mm thick, which is sunk, flush fitting, into the cork
Silkscreened on the reverse in white.
...and here are the words:
It arrived, perfectly packaged in a slipcase...
Even though it's not paper related, it's a really nice and beautifully executed piece to start off the new year - thanks for sending it to me.

13 ...unlucky for some!

Today, I received a superb 2013 new year mailing from Magpie Studio concerning the number 13, which as we all know is unlucky for some - that is, unless you touch some wood! So the guys at Magpie have thoughtfully sent out a piece of wood, so you always have a piece to hand...
Size is 250x115mm and is 7mm thick. Although I can't tell the exact type of wood, it has a lovely grain. Silkscreened in one colour.
Clever idea and well executed - it was even delivered on the closest date to January 13th (which sadly was a Sunday this year - now that really was unlucky!)

Thanks to all at Magpie for thinking about me and my superstitious well-being in 2013.

Ding Dong

This is the clever little festive greeting card (...or should that be parcel?) from Magpie Studio.
Have a look and then I'll explain...

As Magpie see it, posties are the unsung heroes of Christmas. Up early in all weathers contending with impossible addresses and dogs nipping at their heels, this is their tribute to these troopers.

Working with photographer John Angerson, Magpie contrived to getting as many of the posties from around the Shoreditch area and the various routes (or walks as they call them in the PO) as possible ending up with thirteen in total. Words are written by Scott Perry (Bard of Bray).

The outer cover which looks like a package is formed using our Rib-Tone 2 sided 340gsm and forms both the cover and envelope. The fourteen cards are "bound" in using the Royal Mail red rubber bands that we are so familiar with, littering the outside of many front doors and workplaces!

Print, finishing and rubber-banding (!) is by Gavin Martin Colournet. It's also worth pointing out that the Rib-Tone is printed in 1 colour - white - on their new HP Indigo digital press! not silkscreen or hot foil ...it's white ink!

The cards are printed on our Omnia 280gsm, which as you can see from above, prints a solid red, just beautifully and are also printed on the HP Indigo.

DesignWeek Awards 2011

This week I went to the Designweek awards held at the Park Lane Hilton in London. I was kindly invited by Phil Le Monde and Mark Cameron from Gavin Martin Colournet to join their table together with Magpie Studios as they were shortlisted for an an award in the packaging category for the new Gavin Martin Colournet proof bags.
It was a fabulous evening - everyone in their glad rags! The ballroom in the Hilton filled with some of the best creatives in the industry together with a lot of people there for a free drink (that includes me!)
Below is the picture of our merry table - that's me with the bright blue waistcoat!
The evening started full of hope! the Gavin Martin project was shortlisted for packaging and Magpie were also shortlisted in the print design category for The Christmas stamp miniature book for Royal Mail. ...and (quite by chance) I had four projects that I had worked on (all produced on Fenner Paper) shortlisted as well ! (NB Studio - New Blood Posters, The Chase - 26&26 calendar, Hat-Trick - Ebbsfleet Valley Earthworks Brochure, NB Studio - Oxford Thinking) - not bad for a small little paper company like us!

Sadly for my fellow diners, GBH scooped the Packaging category with the phone packaging for Puma but the Gavin Martin Colournet proof bags (pictured right) was commended which is a great accolade.
Any small disappointment was short lived as Magpie then scooped the Print design award with the Christmas stamp miniature book ...and here, pictured below are the three very happy directors of Magpie, Jamie Ellul, Ben Christie and David Azurdia:
...and here's their (very lovely) job:
The awards were presented swiftly and efficiently by the host Ian Moore and DesignWeek editor, Lynda Relph-Knight. Particularly worthy of note (an perhaps unsurprisingly) was the apple ipad which was awarded joint winner of the Consumer product design category and which also won Best of Show. It was lovely to see Harriet Devoy accepting the awards for Apple. I worked on projects with Harriet when she was at Johnson Banks and The Chase - Apple's gain has been graphic design's loss ...we miss her!

It was a great evening - good company and food and my thanks go to Gavin Martin Colournet for inviting me and Magpie for putting up with me on their table!

Land Securities - Studio Awards 2009

I popped into see Magpie's new studio in Shoreditch last week (it's a nice light studio) and was given a copy of a very nice job they've produced for Land Securities.

This publication catalogues the selection and work of three artists that have been selected and sponsored by Land Securities.

Scott O'Rourke, Petros Chrisostomou and Mike Tuck have been the fortunate recipients of studio space, funding and artistic freedom and this publication documents the show that they put on at the end of a year.

It's a beautifully produced 64pp catalogue (165x245mm) with text printed on Neptune Unique FSC 155gsm. The cover is foiled on a black self coloured black (Sirio, I think)

The three founders of Magpie are Jamie Ellul, David Azurdia and Ben Christie.

The book has been well printed by Gavin Martin Associates, especially given the diverse range of the artists media.
Studio photography is by Paul Grundy and Murray Scott
